Have you ever felt like your healing was finally working…
and then suddenly, everything flared up again?
- Your symptoms return.
- Your emotions feel heavier.
- Your capacity feels lower.
- And suddenly it feels like you’re right back where you started.
So many women experience this during healing — especially in midlife while navigating perimenopause, autoimmune symptoms, chronic stress, burnout, and nervous system dysregulation.
And almost immediately, the mind goes to:
“Why am I going backwards?”
“Am I doing something wrong?”
“Why does this keep happening?”
But what if healing was never supposed to feel linear in the first place?
Healing Often Happens in Waves
I think many women enter healing expecting it to feel like steady progress.
Like once we begin supporting ourselves, things should just keep improving in a straight line upward.
But healing rarely works that way.
Healing often looks like waves.
There are moments where you feel:
- more grounded
- more clear
- more connected to yourself
- more emotionally regulated
…and then moments where:
- symptoms flare
- emotions rise back to the surface
- exhaustion returns
- overwhelm shows up again
And when that happens, it can feel incredibly discouraging.
But those waves do not automatically mean you are failing.
A Flare-Up Does Not Mean Failure
One of the biggest shifts in my own healing journey was learning that a flare-up doesn’t always mean something is wrong.
- It doesn’t necessarily mean your tools aren’t working.
- It doesn’t mean you’re doing healing “wrong.”
- And it doesn’t mean you’ve lost all your progress.
Often, it means your body is communicating.
Your nervous system may be processing something deeper.
Your body may finally feel safe enough to release stored
stress, emotion, or tension that it has been holding for years.
But when we interpret every difficult moment as failure…
we often go right back into:
- over-fixing
- controlling
- over-researching
- pushing harder
- trying to force healing
And ironically, that pressure can keep the nervous system stuck in survival mode even longer.
The Part of Healing That Felt Most Discouraging for Me
There was a season in my own journey where this was the most frustrating part.
I remember thinking:
“I’m doing everything right.”
“I’m using the tools.”
“I’m trying so hard to take care of myself.”
And then I would have another flare…
or another emotional crash…
or another season where I felt exhausted and overwhelmed again.
And honestly, it made me question everything.
I remember wondering:
- “Is this even working?”
- “Am I missing something?”
- “Why do I keep ending up back here?”
What I didn’t understand at the time was that I wasn’t actually going backwards.
My body was finally beginning to process layers it had not felt safe enough to process, really ever, before.
But because I didn’t understand that yet…
I kept responding with more control, more pressure, and more fear.
And that cycle is what kept me stuck.
Healing Is Emotional Too
Healing is not just physical.
It’s emotional.
There may be days where:
- grief suddenly surfaces
- anger rises unexpectedly
- exhaustion feels heavier
- emotions seem to come “out of nowhere”
And many women immediately assume this means they are getting worse.
But often, those emotional waves are not random.
Sometimes they are signs that the body finally feels safe enough to let those emotions move.
That realization changed everything for me.
Because instead of fearing every emotional wave…
I began learning how to stay with myself through it.
The Goal Is Not to Stop the Waves
I think many women believe healing means becoming calm all the time.
But life will always still be life.
- There will still be stress.
- Hard seasons.
- Unexpected emotions.
- Moments of overwhelm.
The goal of healing is not perfection.
The goal is not eliminating every hard moment.
The goal is learning how to stay anchored within yourself through those moments.
That is what nervous system healing begins to create.
Over time:
- recovery becomes easier and faster
- self-awareness deepens
- reactions soften
- capacity expands
- self-trust grows
And that is when lasting change and true healing can start to take place.
The waves may still come.
But they stop taking you under.
You’re Not Starting Over
If you feel like you keep starting over in your healing journey…
I really want you to hear this:
You are not starting over.
Every time you move through a hard moment differently —
- with more awareness,
- more support,
- more compassion,
- and more safety —
you are changing your baseline.
Even when it feels slow.
Even when it doesn’t look dramatic yet.
Healing is often much quieter than we expect it to be.
But that doesn’t make it any less real.
